Homemade Italian-Style Pizza Sauce
Making Italian-style pizza sauce at home is easy and simple. You only need just a few ingredients and a little time. Here is one of my favorite recipes for creating homemade Italian-style pizza sauce.
Italian-Style Pizza Sauce Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 can (400g / 14 oz) of whole good-quality peeled tomatoes
- 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 2-3 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1/2 teaspoon oregano, dried
- A few fresh basil leaves (torn or chopped)
- Salt
- Sugar (optional)
- Black pepper (optional)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Tomatoes
- If using whole canned tomatoes, crush them by hand or blend briefly for a smoother texture
- You can blend for a more uniform sauce or leave it chunky
2. Cook the Garlic
- Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat
- Add minced garlic and cook until fragrant
- Just about 30 seconds to 1 minute is enough, be careful not to burn it
3. Add Tomatoes
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes and bring to a gentle boil
4. Season
- Add salt and basil
- Sugar and/or pepper to taste
5. Simmer
- Let the sauce simmer gently for about 20–30 minutes to allow the flavors to develop
- Stir occasionally
6. Enjoy
- Taste and adjust seasoning if needed
- Let it cool
- Spread on your pizza dough and enjoy
